Oral Hygiene Tips for Special Needs Children
July 5, 2024
Brushing and flossing can be a battle if your little one has sensory issues or other special needs. However, a healthy mouth is important for their overall well-being. Here are a few tips to keep your child’s teeth and gums healthy while accommodating their unique needs.
Establish a Routine
A regular oral hygiene routine is important, so your child knows exactly what to expect every day. Your little one should brush their teeth at least twice a day for 2 minutes. Around the age of six or seven, they should floss their teeth daily. You may need to try different types of soft-bristled toothbrushes to meet their comfort level. A water flosser can be easier to use and more effective than traditional floss.
Brush Together
Set an example for your child by making oral hygiene a family event. Brush and floss with your child to help teach them the importance of a healthy mouth.
Slow Transitions are Better
Change can be difficult for many children, even as something as simple as a new toothbrush. Introduce new items or routines slowly to make the transition easier for everyone.
Limit Sugars and Starches
Tooth decay is more common than childhood asthma. Special needs children can have an increased risk from poor oral hygiene. You can help reduce your child’s risk of decay by limiting sugars and starches, which feed cavity-causing bacteria.
Practice Dental Appointments
Besides brushing and flossing, your child must also see a dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup. Practice visits are a great way to prepare your child for their upcoming appointment. They can tour the office and meet the dental team, so things are a little less scary on the day of their appointment.
Choose a Qualified Dentist
The right dentist matters when it comes to special needs dentistry. Find a pediatric dentist who specializes in your child’s unique situation to provide the compassionate and personalized care your little one requires to maintain a healthy smile.
Your child’s dental team will work with you and your child to help keep their appointment a positive experience.
